John Evans diary and autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typescripts of diary and an autobiography. In his 1881 diary, Evans describes his activities as a Mormon missionary in Wales. In his personal history, he writes about his conversion to the Mormon faith in Great Britain, his migration to Utah, and his experiences in Brigham City, Utah.

Scope and Contents Holograph autobiography, diary, and notebook containing speeches, council meeting minutes, and journal additions. Ferguson writes about his ancestors, early life, education, and his conversion to the Mormon Church in 1844. His diaries cover the years 1852-55 and 1879-80 while serving as a missionary in Scotland. The letters are by Francis, Pierre Francois Faius (Vicar-general of the Geneva diocese), Charles Auguste de Sales (Francis' nephew and successor as Bishop of Geneva), and Antoine Favre (a friend of Francis). Photocopy of typescript. Author discusses his family's British roots; their acceptance of Mormonism while living in Birmingham, England, and their immigration to the United States. Tolton also describes his experiences during the Black Hawk War (Utah) and frontier life in Utah. His account goes into great detail about his involvement in territorial and state politics, his business ventures, family life, and his mission to Great Britain for the Mormon Church.
