Andrew Ferguson diaries and autobiography

Scope and Contents Holograph autobiography, diary, and notebook containing speeches, council meeting minutes, and journal additions. Ferguson writes about his ancestors, early life, education, and his conversion to the Mormon Church in 1844. His diaries cover the years 1852-55 and 1879-80 while serving as a missionary in Scotland. Spencer J. Palmer interview

Scope and Contents

Typescript of an interview taken from the included audiocassette. Palmer was interviewed on 30 July and 1 Aug. 1985 by Christopher B. Finuf for Hillam's War Project. Palmer talks about his experiences as a chaplain for the United States Army during the Korean War. Palmer was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Describes being captured by the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II, the Bataan Death March, and his three and one-third years as a prisoner of war in the Philippines and Japan. Also included are two photographs of Poole in his military uniform and a note stating that his son later served in Japan as a missionary for the Mormon Church. Also on microfilm.

Andrew Jackson Shupe diary

Scope and Contents This is a typescript of a diary of a Mexican War soldier who served in the "Mormon Battalion." The diary was kept from 16 July 1846 to 10 Sept. 1847 with a few entries for the years 1848-1855. He was also among the first groups to enter Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847. He went to Winter Quarters in August 1847 and went to Ogden, Utah in 1852. There are numerous gaps in this diary. The entries tend to be short but some are lengthy and detailed. David B. Tower diary

Scope and Contents

One handwritten, bound journal with photocopy and typescript. Tower's record gives the views of one enlisted man in the War with Mexico. He was not involved in battle but presents an account of marching from Veracruz to Mexico City. He also describes the various areas he visited. Tower spent three months in a military hospital and later returned to the United States.

Lincoln R. Whitaker interview

Scope and Contents

Typescript of an interview taken from the included sound tapes. The interview was conducted by Frank Whitaker on 3 March 1985 for Ray Hillam's War Project. Lincoln Whitaker was from Ogden, Utah, and was drafted into the United States Army in January 1944. He landed in Normandy, France, about 25 days after D-Day. He first saw action in Gilenchirchen, Germany, and describes his many combat experiences.

Albert Winkler interview with J. Murray Rawson

Scope and Contents

Typescript of an interview taken from the included cassette tape. Albert Winkler interviewed Rawson on 14 Oct. 1999 at his home in Orem, Utah, for the office of Special Collections at Brigham Young University. Rawson tells about his experiences during the battle of Iwo Jima. He says that his faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was essential to his survival.

Albert L. Winkler interview with Herbert K. and Erika W. Commichaux

Scope and Contents Typescript of an interview (64 pages) conducted by Albert L. Winkler and Corey Clement on November 9, 2001. Commichaux tells about his position as a company commander in the German Army with the rank of captain. He participated in numerous campaigns including the invasion of Poland in 1939.
