Menominee tribal roll
Scope and Contents
Holograph document recording of names of 398 Menominee Indians in 1872. These individuals were the heads of households. Numbers of men, women, and children of each household are also presented. The roll was also a financial record indicating how much each family unit was paid by the US government on 13 Sept. 1872. The total sum recorded is $6718.69. The payment is believed to have been for Menominee lands in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Two photocopies of these documents are also with the collection.
Also included is a translation of the meanings of the Indian names into English by Mitchell Al Dodge probably written in 1980. A sound recording made of Dodge's pronunciation of these names is found in the Mitchell Al Dodge papers.
