Scope and Contents

Collection contains materials collected by Grace Ann Soelberg as part of her participation in the Amos C. Brown Student Fellowship to Ghana, including trip itineraries, printed email correspondence, handouts, and guidelines. It also includes two publications, "The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America, 1638-1870" by W.E.B. Du Bois, and "A Smart Ghana Repatriation Guide" by Diallo Sumbry. Also contains artifacts Grace obtained in Ghana, including two kente stoles, a jewelry box, a bracelet and a necklace, a Sankofa Healing Journey hat and towel, and an NAACP hat. Includes other souvenirs from the program, including brochures, a chocolate wrapper, and a lanyard. Materials dated 2022.

Biographical / Historical

Grace Soelberg graduated from Brigham Young University in 2022, majoring in history with minors in Africana studies and sociology. Her honor's thesis is titled, "Peculiar Students of a Peculiar Institution: Racial Minorities and Race Relations at Brigham Young University as Presented in the Banyan from 1911-1985." Grace Soelberg was also involved with the BYU Slavery Project, established in 2020, which studies connections to slavery and history of racial discrimination at the institution and its associated founders and past leaders. In 2022, Grace attended the Amos C. Brown Student Fellowship to Ghana.

As of 2023, Grace was a graduate student studying history at the University of Utah.

Biographical / Historical

The Amos C. Brown Student Fellowship to Ghana is a program run in collaboration with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the NAACP. In 2022, the program funded an excursion of multicultural college students and other young adults to be sent to Ghana for ten days. The fellowship aimed to build bridges with Ghanaians, experience the history of the Atlantic Slave Trade and pan-African movement civil rights leaders, and learn about Latter-Day Saints members involved in the Abolitionist movement.
