Scope and Contents

The collection contains black and white photographs and negatives taken by Bruce A. Barrett, and correspondence, newspaper clippings, a camera, and other artifacts collected by Barrett during his service as a photographer in the Army Air Corps in the Occupational Army stationed in Japan. He was stationed at the Tachikawa Air Force Base. The photographs are of personnel and events associated with the 317th Troop Transport Command and 374th Troop Transport Command. There are scrapbooks containing a pictorial history of the World War II Reconstruction in Japan (1946-1949), family life, life in the cities, towns and rural areas and events of general interest. Some of the specific subjects include Far East Air Forces, Mount Fujiyama, Fukui earthquake (1948), C-46 planes, USS General LeRoy Eltinge, Tokyo, and Philippine Islands. Artifacts include a K00-Tiyoko Hexar Ser.II 75mm f/3.5 military aerial camera, an ornamental egg, a paper umbrella, a box puzzle, and a hand carved bamboo walking stick that turns into a pool cue. Also includes two publications, "Principles of the Gospel," and "How to Speak Japanese Language." Collection materials are dated 1918 to 1950.

Biographical / Historical

Bruce Arnie Barrett Jr. was born October 21, 1929, to Bruce Arnie Barrett Sr. and Josie Myrtle Ross in Salt Lake City, Utah. He served in the Army Air Corps in the Occupational Army stationed in Japan as a photographer (1946-1949). He married Eunice Mortensen August 3, 1950. They had six children. He retired from Brigham Young University in 1995 as the Director of Auxiliary Services. Bruce died September 4, 2010 in Orem, Utah.
