Administrative History

eBay (1995-) is an online marketplace where individuals auction and sell goods and services.

AuctionWeb was founded September 3, 1995 by Pierre Omidyar, a computer programmer from San Jose, in his living room. The name officially changed from AuctionWeb to eBay in September 1997, a year after the company entered into its first third-party licensing deal. In 1998, Pierre and co-founder Jeff Skoll brought in Meg Whitman to help the business succeed. In 2002 the firm purchased IBazar and PayPal, and has since acquired and sold several others. 2008 marked the worldwide expansion of eBay. The company has entered into partnerships with several firms such as GM, Disney and Sun. The firm still operates today out of its headquarters in San Jose, California.
