Biographical Note
Louis Lumiere (1864-1948) was an early French photographer and filmmaker.
Louis Lumiere was born October 5, 1864 in France. He and his brother Auguste worked for their father, who owned a photographic firm. During this time, they made improvements to the still photograph process, most notable being the dry-plate process. After their father retired, they began to create moving pictures. They patented multiple processes and pieces of equipment relating to the development of the film camera. Their first footage was recorded on March 19, 1895. They decided later that the filmmaking industry had no future and turned their attention to still photography. In 1903, they patented a color photography process, the "Autochrome Lumiere." Louis died June 6, 1948.
