William Bench letter
Scope and Contents
Photocopy of a handwritten letter dated 1 Feb. 1908 and addressed to "Son & Daughter." The item was written in Manti, Utah. Bench writes about his early life in Utah. He tells about settling in Manti early in the 1850s and about the hardships he faced at that time. He talks about encounters with Ute Indians stating that during "the first engagement we had with the Indians 5 balls passed through my clothing but I was unharmed" and about the preparations made to meet the Utah Expedition of 1857-1858.

Biographical History
William Bench Jr. was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England on November 6, 1840, to William Bench Sr. and Ann Longman. At the age of eleven in 1851, Bench departed for Utah with his family aboard the ship Ellen Maria. On December 25, 1862, he married his first wife, Frances Ann Tatton. On October 11, 1869, he married his second wife, Martine Larsen. On April 10, 1877, he married his third wife, Christina Ericksen. He made a living as a farmer and blacksmith. He died on July 9, 1920, at the age of 79 in Manti, Utah.
