One autographed letter written by Neil Gunn and addressed to a "Mr. Barclay," dated 17 August 1947. In it he thanks Mr. Barclay for his advice on Gunn's books. Includes the envelope in which the letter was sent.

Biographical History

Neil Miller Gunn was born in Dunbeath, Caithness, Scotland, on 8 November 1891. At the age of 12 he went to live with a married sister in St. John's Town of Dalry, where he was privately educated. He passed the Civil Service examination in 1907 and was appointed to customs and excise officer in Inverness in December 1911. He began writing while serving in the first World War. He married Jessie Dallas Frew in 1921. Gunn left customs and excise to become a full-time writer in 1937. He published many novels, including Highland River, Grey Coast, Hidden Doors, Bloodhunt, and others. He also wrote a number of radio and television documentary scripts. He died on 15 January 1973.

Letter was discovered in one of the first edition copies of Gunn's novels purchased by the library in 1983.
