Edward M. Hayhurst letters, 1865 April-May
Scope and Contents
Contains fifteen letters written by Edward Hayhurst to his father during April and May 1865. The letters were written while Edward was convalescing in Dennison General Hospital (Cincinnati, Ohio), waiting to return to his unit. On the April 9, however, General Lee surrendered, effectively ending the war; President Lincoln was assassinated five days later (letters on the 16th and 17th give Edward and his father's reactions to the event). Hayhurst was mustered out of the service from Dennison General Hospital on May 18, 1865.
