Kane Diary, 1 January - 31 December 1893, The Standard Diary, 1893, hardback black cover and damaged binding, 135 pp. (19 pp. blank), dark & light ink and pencil, several short breaks through the account, includes printed Counting-House Calendar for 1893, population statistics, legal holidays, interest laws, rate of income on stocks, rates of postage, and interest table at front.

1 January—names all the members of their family including Elisha’s wife, Griselda [Zella], Tom’s wife, Virginia, and all their servants and pets; 7 January—a meeting held for the Kane Gas, Light, & Heating Co., Elisha and EWK resigned from the directorship and Tom and J.D. Brooder were elected directors; Griselda sick until 1 2 January; 19 January—Elisha went back to Smethport “where things are going against us;” 20-21 January—Blanche Rupert (Evan’s future wife) has diphtheria and EWK is going to nurse her; 29 January-11 February—Evan very ill; 16 February—leave for Florida (Harriet, EWK, and Evan); they stay mostly in St. Augustine; 6 March—back to Kane; 8 March— unhappy about some news from EWK; 10 March—she is “very unhappy;” 14 March—Maggie (servant) “has given warning;” writes of the Y & W, different groups, writes of meetings for each; 13-14 April—attends a convention as a delegate in Port Allegheny, PA; 16 April—Maggie Young, their servant of 8 years, left; writes of plants and flowers; 25 April-5 May—in New York, Princeton, and Philadelphia; 2 May—Robert P. Kane’s daughter, Lila, married; 9 May—EWK “came back from License court beaten;” 18 May—Evan and Blanche Rupert married; 19-29 May—in Chicago, EWK ill for much of the visit; 15-17 June—attended a convention, read her paper on dress and deformity; 29 June—begins taking music lessons; 30 June—made president pro-tem of the Y’s; 7 July—read her paper on dress and deformity to the union; 17-20 July—she, EWK, and Florence at Chautanqua for lectures; 23 July—Blanche and Griselda (Zella) joined the church, Blanche tells her [she’s pregnant]; 27 July—Elisha home from Chicago, the Erie Railroad “has gone into a receiver’s hands;” 4 August—the mill, lumber, and dam destroyed by fire; 2 August—James Shields [E.K. Shields’ son] came; 9 August—Helen Shields came; 30 August—Tom, Virginia, and Jim went to Chicago; 6 September— EWK, Elisha, and [Zella] to Chicago; 13 September—Helen and James leave, Tom, Virginia, EWK, Elisha, and Zella back from Chicago; 20-22 September—in Bradford for convention; writes a little of seeing patients; 10 October—broke her toe; 3 November— Virginia’s mother “after behaving like a brute wants to come when she may kill her by doing so;” 20 November—mentions EWK’s office at the hospital; 30 November-5 December—Harriet ill with grippe; 13 December—Evan resigned as treasurer of the gas company; frequently mentions an “M.J.”; doesn’t write on the Memoranda pages, but uses the “Cash Account” pages for her monthly accounts; also uses some of the “Bills Payable” pages for names and addresses, record of letters written, and account records; the last page has some notes and addresses written on it.
