The letters were written while the 124th Ohio was traveling south from Cleveland, Tennessee through Buzzard's Roost (near Dalton, Georgia), Kingston, the Allatoona Mountains, and Dallas, northeast to near Acworth, then southeast to the Marietta area of Georgia. The unit participated in the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge in mid-May. Then, toward the end of June, Hayhurst became ill and was taken to the General Field Hospital with typhoid fever.
