Biographical History

From the Collection:

The Physical Education Department was a part of the College of Arts and Sciences until 1932 when it was transferred to the College of Education. The first degree for work in physical education was awarded in 1942, before which students had to earn a degree in education. Soon after the department became the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation under Charles J. Hart. Hart was the chairman of the department from 1937-1953, and later chairman of the Department of Physical Education, Men from 1953-1962.
