Restricted. Closed for 35 years from the date of creation of the records, and thereafter open to the public in accordance with the University Archives Policy.

It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain any necessary copyright clearances. Permission to publish material from Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation department chair records must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services and/or the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Board of Curators.
The Physical Education Department was a part of the College of Arts and Sciences until 1932 when it was transferred to the College of Education. The first degree for work in physical education was awarded in 1942, before which students had to earn a degree in education. Soon after the department became the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation under Charles J. Hart. Hart was the chairman of the department from 1937-1953, and later chairman of the Department of Physical Education, Men from 1953-1962.
