Attached note: BYU President Receives Gift from Ecuador, June 21, 1983: Ecuador's minister of heath, Dr. Luis Sarrazin, has sent an imposing wood sculpture to Brigham Young University President Jeffrey R. Holland as a "thank-you" and tribute for the work of a BYU performing group in his country. In a letter to Holland, Sarrazin paid high compliments to the Lamanite Generation and BYU personnel who accompanied the American Indian -Polynesian -Latin American group on its recent tour of South America. The group gave several well -received performances in Ecuador. The sculpture, titled "The Family," was delivered by Ecuador's vice minister of health, Dr. Fidel Endara, who is visiting the United States to attend meetings of the World Health Organization in Washington, D.C. Endara and his wife, Dioselina, were also in Provo to visit with their daughters, Nina and Carolina, who are attending BYU. Serrazin wrote that is was an "unforgettable experience" to have the Lamanite Generation in Ecuador, and to hear the message of friendship and love presented by the young performers. He told Holland that the wood carving "represents what you and I appreciate the most: The Family." It depicts the faces of a father and mother on top, bound together with the faces of their children by a surrealistic wooden form, and indicates the need for the family to build a solid union, Sarrazin said. The carving was produced by noted Ecuadoran sculptor Alcides Montesdeoca.
