From missions to mountains : a network view of westward expansion / Richard K. Behrens
Scope and Contents note
Richard K. Behrens' essay discusses the westward expansionist movement in the United States from 1775 to 1875. In his essay, Behrens makes the argument that Dartmouth College's original mission to the Indian's connexion, among other circumstances, was significant to the West because after it was performed it subsequently evolved into a systematic westward focus. Due to this, Behrens' claims that various types of pioneers, from mountain men to the Mormons, were only able to settle and travel in such great success because of Dartmouth's fore running involvement. Throughout his article, Behrens shows evidence and research supporting his ideas while displaying the history of various pioneers from 1775 to 1875.
