Biographical History

William Smith (1824-1915) was an English-born Mormon convert.

William Smith was born April 12, 1824 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England to parents William Smith and Mary Etchells. Smith's father died when he was a young boy, so he was raised by his mother. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 8, 1840, and he served a partial Mormon mission in England in approximately 1852. He married his first wife Ann Ormandy on May 12, 1845 in Cheshire, England and they had two children before her death on September 17, 1850. He then married his second wife, Mary Hibbert on June 27, 1852 and they had nine children together. In 1856, Smith immigrated to America with his family and his mother; they arrived in St. Louis, Missouri and later trekked west to be with the Saints in the Salt Lake Valley. Once they arrived in Salt Lake, Smith worked as a brick maker.

William Smith died September 10, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
