Scope and Contents

Includes a 149-page holograph diary kept by Eliza Ann Bennion from 1871 to 1876, while living on the "Bennion Ranch" near Vernon, in Rush Valley, Utah. Records the daily activities of a young woman in 19th century Utah, including helping her mother, doing chores, and going to church and school. She also tells of visits to family members in Taylorsville, Utah. Most entries are brief and recount simple incidents. Also includes a typed transcript, dated 1996, prepared by her granddaughter, Dawn Bennion Sandberg. Transcript includes a postscript and pictures of Eliza Ann Bennion and members of her family.

Biographical / Historical

Eliza Ann Harker Bennion was born on August 25, 1853 in Taylorsville, Utah to Joseph Harker and Eliza Ann Smith. She married Hyrum Bennion on December 13, 1869 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had 7 children. The Bennion family helped settle the West Jordan, Utah area. Eliza died on June 19, 1946 in Taylorsville, Utah.

Biographical / Historical

Dawn Bennion Sandberg was born on May 9, 1929, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph Samuel Bennion and Florence Belle Hamilton. She was married to Karl Christian Sandberg on June 7, 1954. Dawn transcribed the diary of her ancestor, Eliza Ann Bennion, who was an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She died on August 6, 2020, in St. George, Utah.
