Scope and Contents

Contains a birth register kept by Elizabeth Fluckiger Fuhriman while she served as a midwife in the Providence, Utah, area. The register covers the years 1898 to 1932. Inside the register is also a description of the Utah law regarding the reporting of births. Also includes "From the Alps to the Rockies- One of a Family," a family history of the descendants of Jacob Fuhriman, which includes a story of Elizabeth's conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints, her immigration to Utah from Switzerland, and her life as a midwife (see pages 98 to 104). The history was written by Walter U. Fuhriman and Dean K. Fuhriman in 1987.

Biographical / Historical

Elizabeth Fluckiger Fuhriman was born May 25, 1860 in Dürrenroth, Switzerland to Ulrich Flückiger and Anna Kaeser. She married Christian Von Almen in 1884, the same year she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The couple immigrated from Switzerland to Utah in 1888, where Christian died a few months later. In 1890, Elizabeth was selected by the Relief Society to go to Salt Lake City to study nursing. She became a midwife and worked in Providence, Utah. On July 10, 1895, Elizabeth married Godfrey Fuhriman in Logan, Utah. Elizabeth worked as a midwife until at least 1932. She died October 7, 1936.

Custodial History

Items were given to Sandra Rogers in 2002 by Dean Fuhriman when he established a scholarship in nursing in the name of his ancestor, Elizabeth Fluckiger Fuhriman. Sandra had been serving as Dean of the School of Nursing at the time. Sandra donated them to Special Collections in August 2021.
