Biographical / Historical

B. Cecil Gates was born Brigham Cecil Gates on August 17, 1887, to Jacob F. Gates and Susa Young Gates in Laie, Hawaii, while his parents were serving a mission. He is the brother of accomplished opera singer Emma Lucy Gates Bowen. He received early music training from teachers at Brigham Young Academy and the New England Conservatory of Music, and began teaching piano lessons in St. George, Utah. He served a mission in the Eastern States Mission from 1907-1910, and then went to Berlin, Germany to study at the Scharwenka Conservatory of Music. He graduated in 1913.

On June 30, 1917, B. Cecil married Gweneth Worthen Gibbs in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had five children. He later became head of music at LDS University (predecessor of LDS Business College and Ensign College). B. Cecil founded the McCune School of Music during his time at LDS University. He also served on the first General Church Music Committee. From 1916 to 1935, he was the assistant director of the Tabernacle Choir. He composed popular choral and religious works. With his sister Emma, B. Cecil organized the Lucy Gates Grand Opera Company in 1915. He died on August 31, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Biographical / Historical

Harvey H. Gates was born on January 19, 1889, in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii to Susa Amelia Young and Jacob Forsberry Gates. He served as a missionary in the Northwestern States and British missions. He attended Brigham Young High School and later LDS College. He began working for D.W. Griffith in 1913 and went on to be a screen writer for Warner Brothers. Gates went on to write for a total of 216 films by 1948. He married Lucie Jeanne "Bebe" Genez in 1912 and together they had three children. They were later divorced. He then married Irene Boland on January 19, 1946. Harvey is the brother of accomplished opera singer Emma Lucy Gates Bowen and composer B. Cecil Gates. Harvey died on November 3, 1948, in Los Angeles, California.

Biographical / Historical

Albert E. Bowen was born on October 31, 1875, in Henderson Creek, Idaho to Annie Shackleton and David Bowen. He began attending Brigham Young College with his brother in 1896. He completed his studies in teaching. Bowen served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Germany. Before leaving, Bowen married Aletha Ellen Reeder on June 4, 1902, in Logan, Utah. Together they had two sons. After three years in Germany, Bowen accepted a faculty position at Brigham Young College where he continued until 1908 when he left for law school. Bowen graduated in 1911 from the University of Chicago Law School with the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence. He worked as a lawyer in Logan, Utah and later as the County Attorney for Cache County. After the death of his wife in 1905, Bowen remarried Emma Lucy Gates on June 30, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Bowen died on July 15, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
