Abraham H. Cannon diary volume 13, 1890-1891

 Item — Box: 2, Folder: 2
Identifier: Vault MSS 62 Item 13

Scope and Contents

Abraham continues to write about the affairs of the Church. He writes about many of the financial, disciplinary, and administrative details of Church leadership. He travels throughout Utah to speak at conferences and conduct other matters of business. In September 1890, President Woodruff receives revelation and releases an official manifesto calling on the Saints to obey the law of the land and refrain from plural marriage. However, the manifesto has no direction regarding the principle of polygamy or what should be done with existing families, resulting in confusion among the people. Abraham writes about meetings of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles following the manifesto. He records the thoughts and opinions of his fellow Apostles, including their hesitations and difficulties to adapt. At the following General Conference, the manifesto receives a unanimous sustaining vote. It is discussed at length by the speakers. Abraham also writes about the effects of this manifesto on the Saints' relationship with the U.S. government. Dated 1890 to 1891.
