Edward M. Hayhurst letters, 1863 August
Scope and Contents
Contains fifteen letters written by Edward Hayhurst to his father, mother, or brother Joseph, during August 1863. The letters were written while in camp in Manchester, Tennessee, or as the unit traveled through the Cumberland hills to Harrison's Ferry on the Tennessee River (near Chattanooga). During August, the 124th Ohio was fairly idle, but Hayhurst struggled with jaundice, foot abscesses, and rheumatism. Even so, in addition to his duties as Sergeant and camp clerk, Hayhurst was asked to take over as his unit's Color Bearer starting in August 1863.
