Biographical History
William John Benbow Carter (1852-1908) was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in England and son of pioneers of Saint George, Utah.
William John Benbow Carter (known as John) was born June 29, 1852 to William and Ellen Benbow Carter in Salt Lake City, Utah. When he was nine, he moved with his family to help pioneer the area of Saint George, Utah. John worked alongside his father and brothers in helping build the St. George Temple. He married Emma Blake on June 16, 1873, in Salt Lake City, but Emma died in childbirth along with the child in 1874. From 1877-1879 he served as a missionary in England, primarily in the Nottingham area. On February 2, 1882, John married Lottie Rose Smith in the St. George Temple. He worked in saw mills and helped haul ore during the Silver Reef boom. John and Lottie were the parents of six children. John died on March 8, 1908, of Brights disease in Saint George, Utah.

Photocopies of handwritten diaries, certificates, patriarchal blessings, and biographies. The diaries were kept while Carter served on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and while he lived in St. George, Utah. The biographies are of family members.

Handwritten diary. The record covers from March to July in 1879 when Carter was returning from his mission to England by ship and by rail. Also included are entries for February and March 1882 starting when Carter married Lottie R. Smith in St. George, Utah.
William John Benbow Carter missionary journals
Materials include missionary journals for Carter's service in the area of Nottingham, England. Includes descriptions of Carter's attempts to find his ancestors and relatives throughout England. The fifth journal includes a description of his return to Utah via Sydney, Australia, and his report to President John Taylor upon his return. The sixth journal includes notes Carter took on his genealogy during his missionary service. Dated 1877-1879.
