Biography
Charles W. Penrose (1832-1925) was an author, poet, lyricist, newspaper editor, and professor in Utah.
Charles W. Penrose was born February 4, 1832, in London England. In 1861, he emigrated to Utah and settled in Ogden, Utah. He later became an editor of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City and professor of theology at Brigham Young Academy. Penrose became an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1904, serving as second counselor to President Joseph F. Smith in 1911, and second counselor to President Heber J. Grant in 1921. Penrose died May 19, 1925.

Contains speeches, literary compositions, an autobiography, class notes and notebooks on philosophy of education, notes from speeches, an 1879 account of student tuition to the Young Men's Academy at Spanish Fork, Utah, and records of tuition accounts when Brimhall served as district superintendent of Utah County schools.

Microfilmed diaries (1886-1958), correspondence, newsclippings, and ephemera (advertisements, programs, and a prohibition poster). Some letters include correspondence with Mormon leaders Francis M. Lyman, Heber J. Grant, and Charles W. Penrose. The diaries concern his missions for the Mormon Church in England, and life in Loa, Freemont, and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Materials include correspondence sent to Orson F. Whitney from friends, Church leaders, and admirers (including George H. Brimhall, Benjamin Cluff, and Richard R. Lyman). Handwritten letters dated 9 Feb. and 7 July 1898 and addressed to Frank W. Penrose, Charles' son, serving on a mission for the Mormon Church in Switzerland. The items deal largely with personal and family matters and tell about Charles sending money to Frank to support his missionary efforts.
