Biographical History
E. W. Lichfield (1931- ) was an engineer and a pioneer in the field of atmospheric balloon research and weather forecasting.
Ernest William Lichfield was born in Provo, Utah in the year 1931. He served a Latter-day Saint mission for two-and-a-half years in Norway then returned home to study engineering at Brigham Young University. While there he met and married Oneta Bunnell Lichfield. After his time at BYU he worked as an engineer for Lockhead in Burbank, California and as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He was the inventor of Global Horizontal Sounding Technique (GHOST) balloon apparatus for upper-level atmospheric data collection and was employed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
