Biographical History

Paul Alfred Pratte (born 1938) is a retired journalism professor in Utah.

Paul Alfred "Alf" Pratte was born in 1938 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He received his BA in journalism from Brigham Young University in 1962. He initially took various jobs as a writer for Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret News, and Provo Daily Herald, then moved to Hawaii and worked as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. He received his master's degree from BYU in 1967 and began a Hawaiian statewide Latter-day Saint newspaper called Hawaii Record-Bulletin, which remained in print for 25 years. Pratte taught part-time at Hawaii Pacific College, the University of Hawaii where he received his PhD in American Studies in 1976. He then taught at Kapiolani College in Hawaii, Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, and finally taught journalism at BYU in Utah for 19 years, with a focus on media history and newspaper and magazine writing. Pratte served as president of the American Journalism Historians Association from 1994-1995. He retired from Brigham Young University in 2003 and moved back to Hawaii to help edit, compile and contribute as an author to the 50-year history of BYU-Hawaii.
