Deseret News (Firm)
Administrative History
The Deseret News (1850- ) is a newspaper published in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The first edition of the Deseret News was published on June 15, 1850, on a $60 printing press which had traveled 1100 miles to Salt Lake City. It began as a weekly paper, focusing on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as some national news. Today, it is still a widely read source of news and information as well as the official organ of the Church.

Robert Aveson newspaper clippings
Photocopies of newspaper clippings probably taken from the "Deseret News." Some of the materials were written or edited by Aveson. They deal with a wide range of subjects relating to Utah and Mormon Church history.
Department of the Treasury letters
Two handwritten letters from a copy book. The items deal with the payment of claims in Utah and paying the "Deseret News" for services. Also discussed is the appointment of federal officials in the Utah Territory.
Deseret News (Firm) audit
Letterpress copy of a handwritten audit covering the years 1854 through 1856. The item documents the materials printed by the Deseret News for the United States Government. The document verifies the prices paid for the services. The audit was signed by Benjamin Allen, William I. Appleby, and James McKnight.
Deseret News lists
Handwritten record of items purchased by the Deseret News in Fillmore, Utah at the store of Samuel Pierce Hoyt (1807-1889). Also included is a list of persons paid by the Deseret News for work completed. Some of the entries are believed to have been written by George Q. Cannon, the Mormon apostle.
James Duckworth scrapbook
Newsclippings pasted into a blank book believed to have been created by James Duckworth. Most of the clippings were taken from the "Deseret News" and relate to Mormon Church topics including history and doctrine. Some of the items were written by Mormon Church leaders.

Consists of papers, articles, photographs, and correspondence related to Smith's career with the Deseret News and the Church News. Dated 1945-1979.

Includes 2,158 photographs of advertising photography, primarily produced for Zions Bank by Evans Advertising. Includes images of animals, art, and other subjects. Materials dated 1948-1989.
J Malan Heslop large original prints for contests and displays, 1946-1988
Includes 460 original prints, mostly mounted. These 11 x 14 inch and 16 x 20 inch original prints cover a gamut of subjects from news photos, sports and action, feature photos, entertainment, celebrities, children, agricultural, weather, and Israel. They were both award winning photographs and photographs exhibited in various places, such as the Utah State Fair or the National Press Association. Materials dated 1946-1988.
