Administrative History
The Deseret News (1850- ) is a newspaper published in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The first edition of the Deseret News was published on June 15, 1850, on a $60 printing press which had traveled 1100 miles to Salt Lake City. It began as a weekly paper, focusing on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as some national news. Today, it is still a widely read source of news and information as well as the official organ of the Church.

Includes 1,747 photographs and 700 slides taken by J Malan Heslop throughout the Middle East. Subjects include, but are not limited to, Meggido, Lacish, Jerusalem, Mt. Carmel, Qumran, and Jacob's Well. Materials dated 1967-1985.

Includes 1,857 photographs of various people doing normal day activities, mostly in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area. Materials dated 1948-1989.
J Malan Heslop photographs of photojournalism, Utah, and the world, 1948-1989
Includes 14,405 photographs and 3,446 slides which represent Heslop's photojournalism career, with the exception of his photography work documenting The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Over fifty percent of the photographs document events in Utah, especially in Salt Lake City. There are also extensive international travel. There are also some artistically experimental photographs in addition to photographs intended for advertising. Materials dated 1948-1989.

Includes 4,433 photographs taken by Heslop in the United States, outside of Utah, and internationally to Europe, South America, Asia, and the South Pacific. His international travels were while he was on assignment for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but not specific to the Church. Materials dated 1948-1989.
