Materials document Whitney's service as bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as other aspects of the administration, economics, and community life in Mormon communities in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois.

Contains the personal papers of Whitney, including correspondence, account books, patriarchal blessings and other materials dating from between 1817 and 1900. These papers primarily document his church and personal business in Kirtland, Ohio and Nauvoo, Illinois. Includes extensive correspondence with his brother, Samuel F. Whitney.
