Scope and Contents Photocopy of a microfilm copy of a typescript. The item is an autobiography of Price W. Nelson. The account is largely retrospective even though much of it is written like diary entries. Also included is a diary to Nelson dated 5 Aug. 1935. Nelson writes about his birth in California in 1855, his journey to Utah in 1857. He also settled in Franklin, Idaho, in 1859 and moved to Logan, Utah, in 1864. He later moved to Glendale, Utah. Scope and Contents Three volume, leather-bound diary recording Poe's overland journey from Iowa to Oregon and return in 1847-48. Volume 1 is primarily concerned with camping locations and daily mileage. Poe is a terse diarist but does include some details. He writes about seeing 70 Mormon Battalion soldiers and is critical of the Indians, "the most miserable race in the world." Volume 2 mostly describes Oregon's weather. Two balloon fragments, one containing the following typed information: "Portion of gas balloon 'Explorer' used in stratosphere flight. Started - 5:40 A.M. July 28, 1934 from five miles SW of Rapid City, So. Dakota. Ascended to 60613 feet approx. when bag developed rip which forced flyers to descend by parachutes. Landed July 28 at 3:40 P.M. near Holdrege, Neb. where the gondola was wrecked." Fragment signed by W. E. Kepner, Albert W. Stevens, and Orvil A. Anderson.
