Handwritten letter on parchment to the Emperor's son, Philip II. The item is an instruction to Philip that he can trust Ferdinand I but not the "Bishop of Madrid." Charles warns Philip of the "seditions" in France and orders him to keep the borders of Spain protected. The letter concludes with words of farewell and blessing adjacent to the Emperor's symbol.

Scope and Contents Contains 176 handwritten letters (379 leaves and in Spanish) relating to Spain's struggle with her English, French, and Dutch enemies on the seas of western Europe. They especially deal with how to conduct the naval war against Spain's enemies after the defeat of the Armada. The items cover the period of Philip's reign from 1591 to the King's death in September of 1598. Most of the material is addressed to Diego de Orellana de Chaves, the royal governor of Spain's northern coast....
