Photocopies of handwritten and printed petitions, affidavits, and published and unpublished accounts of the persecutions suffered by the Mormons in Missouri. The materials were an attempt to get redress for their grievences, especially relating to their expulsion from Missouri in 1839. The items were acquired from the National Archives and Record Service in Washington, D.C.

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography and diary with a typescript of the item. Pettigrew (apparently also spelled Pettegrew) started his autobiography in 1840. His diary is sporatic and has many gaps. Pettigrew writes about his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832, his life in Missouri during the persecutions of Mormons there, his experiences in Nauvoo, Illinois, his work as an LDS missionary, his participation in the migration of Mormons from Nauvoo,...

Handwritten and signed indenture made on Dec. 14, 1850. This item records the transfer of all rights, titles, and interests of four lots of ground belonging to George and Theodosia Strother to St. Louis Mo.

Photocopies of a letter printed in the "Quebec Gazette" 20 (18 Feb. 1839) p. 2. Also included is a typescript of the letter. Rigdon, confined in the jail at Liberty, Missouri outlines "the sufferings, the calamities, the woe and wretchedness of the Mormons" in Missouri.

Contains two documents, a bill and receipt, dated August 8, 1822, and a bond for a writ from the Court of Chancellory, State of Missouri, July 9, 1821.

Scope and Contents Materials include original handwritten reminiscences and diaries of Samuel Hollister Rogers from 1841 to 1886. Rogers writes about his life as a Mormon in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. He also tells about his service with the Mormon Battalion, his migration to Utah from California in 1848, his missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his involvement in polygamy. Photocopy and typescript of an order dated Sept. 15, 1838 and addressed to an unnamed sergeant. This item directs the assembling of a company of Missouri Militia at Independence on Sept. 21 and 29, 1838 for the purpose of expelling the Mormons or resisting Indian "invasions."
