Adelia H. Hardin papers

Handwritten letters and miscellaneous papers. The materials relate to the Patty and Hardin families and include a sixteen-page letter by J. R. Hardin telling about his journey from Missouri to Salt Lake City, Utah. Some of the materials relate to the American Civil War. Many of the items were written in California and Missouri.

I. J. Harvey letter

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a handwritten letter addressed to Harvey's wife in Indiana. Harvey describes the experience of being a homesteader on the Missouri frontier and mentions the possibility of buying "negro" for 2 or 3 dollars. In a postscript Harvey relates a rumor that "Jo Smith and others have made their escape from the sheriff" by stealing two horses. He also states that supposedly Joseph Smith (1805-1844) had twenty thousand dollars with him.

Microfilmed copies of original joint legislative committee journals (1838-1839), legislative proceedings (1838-1841), correspondence and orders (1838-1839), evidence given at the court of inquiry held in November 1838 to investigate Joseph Smith (1805-1844) and others for high treason, and certificates dealing with indictments against Mormons (1841) pertaining to the Mormon disturbances in Missouri (1838-1841). The film is 16 mm. and 35 mm. and is photonegative.

John Murdock autobiography and diary

Scope and Contents

Typescripts of a diary and an abridgement of diaries for the years from 1830 to 1859 and 1832. Murdock joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830 and lived in Kirtland, Ohio; Missouri; Nauvoo, Illinois; and Salt Lake City, Utah. He had numerous assignments for the Church and migrated to Utah in 1847. He participated in Zion's Camp in 1834 and went on a mission to Australia from 1852 to 1853.
