William's depression seems to come back to a similar degree as it was before his mission. He tries to adjust to his new quieter life at home. His sister is put in the hospital and his son Mike continues to suffer from cancer, so William and his family spend much time at the hospital. William's physical pain worsens. His daughter Heather continues the divorce process and decides to go back to school. Mike passes away from cancer peacefully in his home with William and the family around.

William writes of frequenting the temple and church meetings with his wife. They begin caring for William's elderly mother-in-law. William goes to see a film that his son had been working on at the time he died from cancer, and the film was dedicated in his honor. William's trucking business seems doomed for bankruptcy. William deals with trauma from his past car accident.

William attends his brother-in-law's funeral. He writes of the politics of his day. He spends much time with his family. William and Carol begin babysitting many grandchildren frequently. William serves often in the temple. He has engine trouble with his Ford and has to get it repaired. Carol has to leave for a while to care for her elderly mother. William and Carol travel across the country on a church history tour. William's sister Luell agrees to be put in a rest home.
