George Albert Smith letter

Handwritten and signed letter addressed to Orson Pratt (1811-1881). Smith states that "An act to amend an act amendatory and supplementary to the Charter of St. George City Approved Feb. 21 1868" had been passed by the legislature of Utah Territory.

Handwritten affidavits sworn before Smoot as mayor of Provo, Utah. The manuscript was apparently recorded by Smoot who seems to be responsible for much of its wording. The item deals with disturbances by United States soldiers in Provo, Utah.

Typewritten biographical sketches (photocopies) of Snow and his wife, Mary Ann V. Snow; ALS's (with typed transcripts) to his fourth polygamous wife, Sarah E.W. Snow, with a few to their children; a certificate of election, a deed, and a family group sheet (photocopies). Letters contain information pertaining to relations with his plural family, his missionary experiences in England, and the building of the Manti, Utah Temple. Includes cover letter by donor.

Edward Jenner Steptoe letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter on blue paper from Steptoe to Sydney Webster, personal secretary of President Franklin Pierce, written on the day Steptoe discovered his appointment as Governor of Utah Territory by President Pierce. In the letter, he enumerates his reservations about the job, praises Governor Brigham Young, expresses doubt about the efficacy of limiting polygamy, and comments generally on the political climate in Salt Lake City. Dated February 7, 1855.

Handwritten legislative act proposed by the Utah legislature. The item was signed by Brigham Young (1801-1877), "Governor" ; Willard Richards (1804-1854), "President of the Council" ; and William W. Phelps (1792-1872), "speaker of the House of Rep." The act relates to the administration of property in Utah.

Utah Governor proclamation

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of printed gubernatorial proclamation dated 23 April 1853. The document describes how "a horde of Mexicans, outlandish men" was creating unrest in the Territory, and orders the arrest of "every strolling Mexican party, and those associating with them" within the area. The document further orders the Utah Militia on alert and directs all Mexicans in the Territory to remain at home. The proclamation was signed at Provo, Utah, by Brigham Young.

Letter-press copy of a handwritten letter. The item is dated 21 March 1857 and addressed to Lewis Cass (1782-1866), Secretary of State for the United States in the Buchanan administration. Whittelsey's letter relates to a request of William H. Hooper, Secretary of the Utah Territory, regarding requisitions for 1857.

Brigham Young letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten letter. The item is dated Sept. 14, 1857 and is addressed to "Major McCullogh" and Lewis Brunson (1831-1888). Brunson was the bishop in Fillmore, Utah for the Mormon Church. Young states that preparations are to be made to deal with the advancing federal troops which were part of the Utah Expedition, 1857-1858. He also outlines the nature of the defense of Utah.
