James Parshall Terry journal

Scope and Contents

Handwritten biographical sketch of Terry's life which describes Mormon difficulties in Missouri, campsites during the exodus west, pioneer life in southern Utah, and Terry's mission to Canada and northeastern U.S., 1887-1888. Also an account of Terry's activities in Echo Canyon during the Utah War, 1857. The journal was written in a watermaster's log which included previous entries.

The early settlement of South Weber

Contents include four typewritten transcriptions of Thomas Peek's history of South Weber, Davis County, Utah. Peek records the history of the establishment and hardships of the Latter-day Saint people in South Weber, including brief descriptions of the Morrisite War of 1862, the Utah War of 1857-1858, and the activities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The history was written in approximately 1900.

Thomas Todd autobiography

Photocopy of a typescript of an autobiography. Todd writes about his youth in Scotland, his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1850, his immigration to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854, his service in the Utah Militia during the Utah Expedition, and his life in Spanish Fork and in Heber City, Utah. He also includes family genealogies.

Tripp's conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his missions to the state of Maine, his visit with Joseph Smith's mother (Lucy Mack Smith), wife (Emma Smith), and son (Joseph Smith III) in Nauvoo in November 1855, his participation in the Utah War in 1857, and his life in Salt Lake City. John Bates Warall letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter written at Camp Floyd, Utah and addressed to Colonel Daniel Ruggles at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Warall gives a general report on the condition and activities of the camp which includes the establishment of musical bands, temperance societies, masonic lodges, and other organizations and events promoting morale among the soldiers.

Nelson Wheeler Whipple diaries

Two different typescripts of the same diary kept by Whipple: one prepared by Phyllis Clayton Pettit, the other by Anor Whipple. The diary gives genealogical data about Nelson Whipple's ancestors and tells of his early experiences in the Latter-day Saint Church, his move to Nauvoo, Illinois, his journey across the Plains to Utah and his life there.

Writings and history of Jonathan Ellis Layne

Typescript (carbon copy) of an autobiographical sketch written by Layne in 1898 which gives details of his early life in Nauvoo, Illinois; his trek across the Plains to Utah; his settlement in Davis, Weber and Cache Counties, Utah; his experiences with the Mormon soldiers sent to oppose Johnston's army; and his eventual move to Alberta, Canada to escape arrest as a polygamist. Also includes extracts from his journal, 1887-1891.

Brigham Young letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten letter. The item is dated Sept. 14, 1857 and is addressed to "Major McCullogh" and Lewis Brunson (1831-1888). Brunson was the bishop in Fillmore, Utah for the Mormon Church. Young states that preparations are to be made to deal with the advancing federal troops which were part of the Utah Expedition, 1857-1858. He also outlines the nature of the defense of Utah. Brigham Young letter to E. B. Alexander

Scope and Contents

Letter, handwritten and signed "Brigham Young" by a scribe, addressed to Col. E.B. Alexander, commander of the 5th and 10th United States infantry regiments during the Utah Expedition. The letter is dated October 7, 1857 and was sent with two copies of the Deseret News in an attempt to "enliven the monotonous routine of camp life."
