James I. Steel autobiography and family records

Identifier: MSS 516
Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with family records apparently also copied by Steel. James Steel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. He later settled in Tooele County, Utah. Steel entered into polygamy in 1874. Also included are ordinations and patriarchal blessings of family members. Steel also writes about his visions and dreams.

Scope and Contents Typewritten and signed letter dated 11 July 1975. Berlin writes briefly about Andrew E. Berlin, his family and Mormon Church activities and his imprisonment for polygamy.

Biography of Nathan Staker

Identifier: MSS SC 2681
Scope and Contents Two typewritten biographies of Nathan Staker with photocopies of the same items. Sanderson wrote the biography of Staker with William Marchant Staker and Sarah Ellis Halley Pearson. The authors are grandchildren of Nathan Staker. Also included is a "History of Nathan Staker." Staker was from Canada. He joined the Mormon Church, migrated to Utah in 1852, married two women, and was a farmer in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.

Brief history of William Cook Prows

Scope and Contents This collection consists of a photocopy of a handwritten biography of William Cook Prows. Prows was a pioneer to both Salt Lake City, Utah and Colonia Juarez, Mexico; a member of the Mormon Battalion; a gold prospector; a cooper; a horticulturist; and a polygamist. He was married to both Lodesky Ann Roberds and to Louisa Melinda James both of whom he took to Arizona. Then he took Louisa to Colonia Juarez due to the persecution of polygamists.

Melissa Brownell letter

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, addressed to "Beloved Sisters," dated June 26 of an unknown year. Internal evidence suggests the item may have been written in the 1880s, but this is uncertain. Brownell writes about men, marriage, and polygamy largely in negative terms. She mentions Mormon men bringing their polygamous wives to California.

Susan Elizabeth Redd Butler papers

Scope and Contents Correspondence, autobiographies, diaries, biographies, newspaper clippings, and school compositions. The correspondence, biographies, and diaries relate to Susan's family and parents. Many of the items relate to Mormon polygamy and to Butler's school career. Also included is a biography and biographical materials of Butler's father, Lemuel Hardison Redd.

David Candland diary

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten diary. Candland writes about joining the Mormon faith and his life in Salt Lake Valley and in Sanpete County, Utah. He talks about his polygamous marriages, the Utah Expedition, and the birth and deaths of children. The item includes a major gap between 1863 and 1900.

Thomas Chamberlain diaries

Scope and Contents Three diaries (1875, 1880-1882, 1893-1896), genealogical group sheets of Chamberlain's families, and ten photocopied photographs of Chamberlain and his wives and children. The two earliest items are photocopies of holograph manuscripts while the third is a typescript.

Chronological history of Samuel Mulliner and his families

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a typewritten and handwritten family history. The handwritten sections are corrections to the text and photocopies of diary entries. Samuel Mulliner (1809-1891) was a convert to the Mormon Church. He was raised in Scotland, moved to Canada, and migrated to Utah in 1850. He had three wives and lived in Salt Lake City, Lehi, and Orderville, Utah.

Ernest Clark notebook

Scope and Contents Notebook contains an autobiography of Ernest Clark, as well as notes from a sermon by Mary Lightner on Joseph Smith and a copy of a revelation on marriage by John Taylor. Clark's autobiography describes his early years in Utah, his family's life in Mexico and their expulsion from the country in 1912, his education, and his teaching career in Idaho and Wyoming. Contents date from between 1905 and 1968.
