Rachel Calder Ashworth family papers and histories contains family histories, biographies, autobiographies, family records, pedigrees and photographs of her pioneer ancestors and their families, many of whom were in Vernal, Utah. Some of the more frequently mentioned families are the Ashworths, the Mentzers, the Hackings, and the Calders. Dated from approximately 1900 to 2015.

William Atkin autobiography

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a microfilmed copy of a typescript. The item is an autobiography of William Atkin "A Youth's Experience taken from the Union printed in 1896." William Atkin was born in England on 27 March 1835 and joined the Mormon Church in 1852. He migrated to the United States in 1855 and moved to Florence, Nebraska. He came to Utah in a handcart company and commented on the inexperience of the people in his group. He arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 10 November 1859.

James Samuel Page Bowler autobiography

Photocopy of a microfilm copy of a typescript. The item is a biography of James Samuel Page Bowler written at an unknown date, probably around 1921. Bowler was born in England in 1845 and describes his life as a Mormon in that country. He migrated to Utah in 1880 and settled in Hebron, Utah. He worked as a shoemaker, was elected a justice of the peace, and taught school at Fort Hamblin, Utah. He moved to Parowan, Utah, in 1894 and then to Gunlock, Utah.

Azariah Smith autobiography

Handwritten fragment of an autobiography. The pages are numbered from 10 to 17. The item is believed to have been written when Smith was over 84 years old. Smith writes about his early settlement in Manti, Utah, and his subsequent life there.

William Adams Hickman autobiography

Typewritten excerpts from an autobiography by William Adams "Wild Bill" Hickman. Hickman converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and migrated to Utah in 1849, served as a peace officer in Utah, and raised horses. Also included are excerpts from letters by family members.

Truman Osborn Angell autobiography

Photocopy of a typewritten autobiograpy. The item includes excerpts from Angell's diary. Angel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and supervised a portion of the construction of the Kirtland Temple. He relates faith-promoting stories related to the Kirtland and Nauvoo temples. Also included are patriarchal blessings.

William Snow autobiography

Scope and Contents

Handwritten autobiographical materials. Snow writes about his early life in Vermont, conversion to the Mormon Church, and missionary work. Some genealogy and patriarchal blessings are included. Snow made the overland journey by ox team from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Salt Lake City in 1850. He writes of numerous deaths from cholera, problems with company discipline, and travelling conditions.

Agnes Smith Baxter autobiography

James I. Steel autobiography and family records

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with family records apparently also copied by Steel. James Steel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. He later settled in Tooele County, Utah. Steel entered into polygamy in 1874. Also included are ordinations and patriarchal blessings of family members. Steel also writes about his visions and dreams.
