James Allen and R. B. Mitchell letters

Identifier: Vault MSS 399
Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, dated 16 July 1846, and composed at the "Headquarters Morm. Batt. U.S. Volunteers." Allen writes about the march to California and the necessity of protection against Indians. On the reverse of Allen's letter is found a handwritten letter, dated 21 July 1846, and signed by R. B. Mitchell, "Indian Agent." The item was composed at "Point aux Poules." Mitchell praises the conduct of the emigrating Mormons in general and with the Indians in particular.

Jacob Kemp Butterfield letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy and typescript of a handwritten letter written while on the march with the Mormon Battalion. The item is addressed to Butterfield's mother and gives particulars about the Mormon pioneer trek to the west as well as the Mormon Battalion's mission and activities. Butterfield explains his Mormon faith to his mother.

Henry Clegg diary and letter

Scope and Contents Typescript of a diary and a typewritten letter. The diary was written from 30 Mar. to 4 Sept. 1855 and records Clegg's journey from Liverpool, England to the Western U.S. on his way to Utah. Parts of the original handwritten diary are in shorthand and were not transcribed. The letter is dated 12 Aug. 1981 and is from Garth N. Jones to James B. Allen. It tells about the life of Henry Clegg.

William Horne Dame papers

Scope and Contents Contains correspondence, patriarchal blessings, financial records, militia records, photographs, and miscellaneous items. Much of the correspondence is between Dame and General Authorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The material relates to Dame's life and activities, including his militia service and his connection to the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857.

William Fawcett papers

Scope and Contents Photocopies of handwritten autobiographies, a poem, lists, notes, and letters. Fawcett was born in England, joined the Mormon Church in 1840, migrated to Utah in 1850, and settled in St. George, Utah where he served as a Mormon bishop. The other materials relate to Fawcett's work for the Mormon Church in St. George.

Charles D. Fletcher papers

Scope and Contents Diaries. Also with the collection are letters received by Fletcher from various residents of Provo, Utah, including Samuel S. Jones, mayor of the town. Also included is business account books of Charles D. Miller, materials related to the Perpetual Emigration Fund of the Mormon Church, and some Mormon patriarchal blessings.

George Teasdale journal

Scope and Contents The central item in the collection is the diary of George Teasdale, kept from 1 January 1861 to 26 December 1861. The journal covers the conclusion of his time presiding over the Scottish mission, his journey to Zion, and his arrival in Salt Lake. Also included are a transcription of the George Teasdale diary; a letter dated Lima, Illinois, 19 March 1842, from William Wright to William Laurie in Burlington County, New Jersey, recounting the occurrence of a "most fatle disease" in his settlement...
