Writings and history of Jonathan Ellis Layne
Typescript (carbon copy) of an autobiographical sketch written by Layne in 1898 which gives details of his early life in Nauvoo, Illinois; his trek across the Plains to Utah; his settlement in Davis, Weber and Cache Counties, Utah; his experiences with the Mormon soldiers sent to oppose Johnston's army; and his eventual move to Alberta, Canada to escape arrest as a polygamist. Also includes extracts from his journal, 1887-1891.
Brigham Young letter
Letter from Brigham Young, Richardson Point, Camp of Israel, to his wife, Harriott Cook, Nauvoo, Illinois, 15 March 1846. Nauvoo looks like a prison to him, so he will continue West. Joseph B. Noble is to bring her over. Asks her to go visit Mary and Margaret Pears. Desires to see her and "the little boys." They are feeling happy in the camp. Edwin Little has been sick. They plan to move from their current position on next Wednesday.
Brigham Young letter
Photocopy of a handwritten letter. The item is dated March 4, 1858 and is addressed to Lewis Brunson (1831-1888), bishop for the Mormon Church in Fillmore, Utah. The letter is an authorization by Young for Brunson to give "Brother Robb" livestock in repayment of a loan he had given to the Mormon Church in Liverpool, England for the purpose of emigration.
