Smith writes about his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, his immigration to the United States in 1843, and life at Nauvoo, Council Bluffs, and Winter Quarters. The collection consists of photocopies of Smith's mission diary, his autobiography, some correspondence, and records of ordinances performed in the Endowment House in the 1870s. Smith kept his diary while serving on a mission to Great Britain (1860-1863). He recorded the activities and experiences of missionary life and activities. The autobiography is brief and covers from Smith's birth to 1857.

Contains a round wooden box that belonged to Eliza R. Snow. It was donated to the BYU President's Office in 1973 by H. R. Wilson of Santa Rosa, California. According to description by donor, the box belonged to Eliza R. Snow and was used when going to Utah in early 1846-1847. The box includes a wooden spoon that supposedly came with the box.
