Hyrum L. Andrus book drafts

Scope and Contents Typewritten book drafts with handwritten corrections. One of the drafts is for Andrus' book "Doctrinal Commentary on the Pearl of Great Price" which was first published in 1960. The other draft is of his book "Joseph Smith: The Man and the Seer" which was first published in 1967. Andrus comments on the Mormon scripture, the Pearl of Great Price, and writes a biography of Joseph Smith, the first president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Scope and Contents Photocopies of handwritten and typed letters, histories, interviews, diaries, pamphlets, and newspapers. The materials relate to a large range of topics in the early history of the Mormon Church; Joseph Smith, second president of the Mormon Church; and his family. Interviewees include Smith family members and those who knew them. The items were copied by Donald Q. Cannon as part of the continuing Mormon Church History Sources Project.

Robert Filmore letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten and signed letter, dated 6 July 1844, and composed in Warren County, Illinois. Filmore writes to "dear children" and tells them about the murder of the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, and his brother Hyrum. He also speaks about the Mormon temple in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Augusta Gardiner letter to Brigham Young

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, dated October 19, 1877, written in Salt Lake City, Utah, and addressed to Brigham Young, second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gardiner writes that she has prayed and received a dream. She desires to be sealed to a good man.

D. M. McAllister galley proofs

Scope and Contents Galley proofs of an article by McAllister which was published in the September 1917 issue of the Improvement Era, A Mormon Church periodical. The article explains that Mormon temple ordinances are essential to salvation. The sheets bear holograph corrections and a note by Joseph F. Smith, the 6th president of the Mormon Church. Smith's note suggests that the article be published as a four page tract.

Predictions made by President Brigham Young

Scope and Contents Typewritten and notarized affidavits. The materials purport that the second president of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young (1801-1877), visited Provo, Utah, on numerous occasions and predicted that there would be a Mormon temple built on a bench of land northeast of the town. He also predicted that a railroad line would go west from Ogden, Utah, across the Great Salt Lake. These items are stories handed down by word of mouth through family members in Provo, Utah.
