John Adams letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten and signed letter. Adams states that a Mr. Young "from Mendon" has been hired to do some work for him. It is unclear if the John Adams in the letter is the same John Adams (1786-1856) who wrote a legal history of New York State. The "Mr. Young" may have been Brigham Young (1801-1877), second president of the Mormon Church. The date of the item is also uncertain.

Scope and Contents Photocopies of typewritten biographies of Henry Bailey Jacobs and Zina Diantha Huntington Young, along with photocopies of typed and handwritten letters. The items, which relate to family matters and marriage relationships, include a letter from the LDS Historical Department regarding the marriages of Zina to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and a letter from the U.S. Customs Court in New York denying the existence of any records relating to a divorce between Henry and Zina.

John Taylor certificates of copyright

Scope and Contents Photocopies of printed certificates with handwritten additions. The materials were from the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress. The items were sent to John Taylor (1808-1887), third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, granting him copyrights for two books. These items were entitled: "History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" and "Biography of Joseph Smith, American Prophet."

Edward R. Ford letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten and signed letter dated 8 Sept. 1842, composed in St. Louis, Missouri, and addressed to "His Exelency," probably governor Thomas Reynolds of Missouri. Ford describes an attempt to arrest the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, and his friend, Orrin Porter Rockwell.

Scope and Contents Typescript of a letter dated March 15, 1886 composed in Ramah Valencia County, New Mexico, and addressed to John Taylor, president of the Mormon Church. Hatch writes about the progress of missionary work among the Indians.

Harold B. Lee letters

Brigham Young letters to Brigham Morris Young

Scope and Contents Photocopies of handwritten letters addressed to Young's son, Brigham Morris Young (1854-1931), while serving on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii. Brigham Young writes about the Church's activities in Utah including the progress on the St. George Temple, Young's inspiration to start the United Order, his trip to St. George, Utah, and numerous conferences and meetings.

Sutcliffe Maudsley portraits

Scope and Contents Pen-and-ink portraits of the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and his brother, Hyrum Smith (1800-1844). The items have been framed for possible display. The portraits may have been cut from something larger. The items were signed at the bottom of each picture and were dated 1844. Collection also includes digital scans of the items on compact disc.

David O. McKay letter
