Scope and Contents Photocopies and microfilmed copies of letters, pamphlets, newspaper artilces, sections of books, maps, biographies, histories, and miscellaneous items. The materials relate to a large range of topics in the early history of the Mormon Church, to its early leaders and presidents, and to the genealogies of early prominent members of that faith. The materials were acquired in various research institutions in Massachusetts.

Scope and Contents Photocopies of typed and printed official statements of the First Presidency of the Mormon Church between the years 1935 and 1951 as well as a book entitled "Statements of the First Presidency" volume 6. This item was published in 1975 and compiled and autographed by James R. Clark. The statements relate to the church members and hierarchy dealing with Mormon doctrine and theology as well as Mormon Church policy and procedure. Scope and Contents Photocopy of a typewritten letter signed by Spencer W. Kimball and other members of the First Presidency of the Mormon Church. Letter includes guidelines for local Church authorities when interviewing members for callings, temple recommends, or missionary service. Includes instructions for local leaders to avoid indelicate inquiries into marital relations, as well as an interpretation of oral sex as constituting an unnatural, impure, or unholy practice.

Heber J. Grant letter to Miriam Taylor

Scope and Contents Typewritten and signed letter dated September 24, 1920 and addressed to Miss Miriam Taylor of Provo, Utah. The letter informs Miss Taylor that she has been "selected as a missionary to labor in New Zealand" for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is expected to leave in November of 1920.

William Dydamous Johnson letters to Brigham Young

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letters, dated 29 Oct. 1875 and 16 Feb. 1876, and addressed to Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church. Johnson asks for help in his personal finances and also writes about funds for the Deseret Museum.

Harold B. Lee letters

Scope and Contents Photocopies of three letters addressed to Gil Hodges and signed by Harold B. Lee and David O. McKay, presidents of the Mormon Church. The letters concern the sealing of women to their husbands and the ligitimacy of the use of birth control.

Scope and Contents Addressed to a teacher in Weber County. Mentions his early knowledge that God had a use for him and comments on the relative worth of being practical-minded and having book learning. Encourages practical education. He notes that he wrote the letter "with my own hand". Typed transcript included.

Brigham Young letters to Brigham Morris Young

Scope and Contents Photocopies of handwritten letters addressed to Young's son, Brigham Morris Young (1854-1931), while serving on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii. Brigham Young writes about the Church's activities in Utah including the progress on the St. George Temple, Young's inspiration to start the United Order, his trip to St. George, Utah, and numerous conferences and meetings.

Moses Martin letter to Joseph Smith

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, composed in La Porte, Indiana, dated November 7, 1841, and addressed to Joseph Smith, first president of the Mormon Church. Martin writes to introduce himself, tells of his efforts to preach the Mormon faith, and asks for a blessing.

Little compiled numerous sources including correspondence and newspaper articles by and about the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brigham Young (1801-1877). The materials cover Young's career as an LDS Church leader until his death and are often interspersed with brief narratives by Little. The items also document LDS Church history. The date of this compilation is uncertain.
