Scope and Contents In this autographed reminiscence, Colfax describes his stagecoach trip from Missouri to California in 1865. It is likely he made the trip in his capacity as chair of the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads. Angus M. Cannon diaries and letters

Scope and Contents

Collection includes three handwritten diaries dated 1885 to 1886 two letters from 1891. In his diaries, Cannon writes about his imprisonment at the Utah State Penitentiary for polygamy and his subseqent experiences as a stake president for the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. His letters are addressed to his sons George and John, and to Levi Colvin of Payson, Utah. Photocopies and typescripts of the diaries are also included.

Ebenezer Crouch autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typescript of an autobiography. Crouch was born in Tumbridge Wells, Kent, England; migrated to America in 1856; and came to Utah in 1859. Crouch tells about encounters with Ute Indians, describes Orrin Porter Rockwell, and writes about being married polygamously. He lived in numerous places in Utah and had several occupations.

Jens Hansen diary

Scope and Contents

Collection contains two photocopies of Jens Hansen's diary from 1886, which includes an account of his trial and experience in the territorial penitentiary. Diary is written in parallel versions, one a narrative account and the other a series of daily entries. Also includes copies of autograph book entries written by Hansen during his stay. His entries describe conditions and activities in the prison, and his relationship with his family.

William Alonzo Hyde letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter addressed to Mrs. Louisa W. Holmes, Hyde's aunt in Fulton, Illinois. The item was written in Kaysville, Utah, on 26 Nov. 1885. Hyde defends the beliefs of the Mormon Church particularly the practice of polygamy.

Thomas Wright Kirby autobiography and diary

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography and diary. These materials were created when Kirby was in the territorial penitentiary of Utah for polygamy. Kirby was born in England, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1852, performed missionary work in England, migrated to Utah in 1863 where he lived in several different places, took additional wives, joined the United Order, and went to prison for polygamy. Two anonymous, photocopied articles relating to Mormon polygamy. One is typewritten and outlines the author's belief that the Mormon Church was in error when it discontinued plural marriage. Five leaves of the document (pages 8-15) are missing. The other item is a holograph manuscript which tells about the issuing of the "Manifesto" in 1890 which formally ended polygamy among the Mormons.

George Reynolds letters

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letters to his wife, Amelia. Twenty-eight itmes were written from 1879-1881 in the Utah Peniteniary while Reynolds was serving a two-year sentence for polygamy. Reynolds tells about prison life, reaffirms his dedication to the Mormon faith, and discusses family matters.
