Walter Alma Sells journals

Scope and Contents

Transcription of the Mormon missionary journals of Walter A. Sells, June 1908-August 1910, while he was serving in the British Mission. The transcription includes some biographical information, a selection of scanned copies from the original journals, and some photographs of Walter and family. About 200 pages. Also contains a photocopy of Alma's Missionary Record Book, which contains statistics about tracts distributed, gospel conversations held, baptisms performed, and so forth.

Collection contains journals, letters, transcripts, and other materials produced by members of the Smoot family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The materials document the missionary service of Brigham Smoot in Samoa and Tonga, the missionary service of Gilbert Van Schoonhoven, the military service of Roland Nesbit Smoot during World War II, and various family events and issues that were occuring at the time. The diary was kept from 1953 to 1957 while Smoot was serving as president of the Northern States Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The other materials relate to the function of the postal service in Utah and to LDS Church matters.

Photocopy of typescript. Short report to Brigham Young (1801-1877) on the efforts to organize the missionaries called to settle along the Little Colorado River. Includes list of prospective missionaries that Stewart recommended calling and a list of some who had agreed to go, but had not yet arrived in Kanab. The writer also requests counsel from Young on various matters pertaining to the mission.

Joseph H. Stimpson diaries

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of handwritten diaries. The items cover the years 1908-1913, 1915-1921, and 1960-1961. Stimpson served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan from 1906 to 1912. He returned to Japan with his wife, Ann Mary Christensen Stimpson, where he served as a mission president for the Church from 1915 to 1921. Many of the entries for 1916 were made by Mrs. Stimpson. The latest diaries were kept when Stimpson was retired in Riverdale, Utah.
