James Franklin Carroll autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typed copy of an autobiography in eight pages. Carroll lived in Heber City, Orderville, Grayson, Blanding, and Salt Lake City, Utah. He also lived for several years in Mexico. Also included is a photocopy of a handwritten letter to his children in which Carroll states his faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The dates of the composition of these items are uncertain.

Scope and Contents Correspondence, military dispatches, a deed, a Taos County Resolution, and two payment vouchers. Nine of these items are personal in nature and are addressed to Carson from friends and family members. The remaining thirty-five letters are concerned with and document Indian affairs. They include instructions from superiors, official correspondence regarding military actions during the American Civil War in the West. They document aspects of the Jicarilla War of 1854-55, the Mescalero...

Willa Cather letters

Scope and Contents

Handwritten, typewritten, and signed letters. Four of the items are addressed to a "Mr. Wyer" and are dated 15 Feb. 1926, 27 June 1931, and 29 Aug. and 6 Sept. of unknown years. Cather tells Wyer about her social activities and contacts. Also included is a letter dated 4 Jan. of an unknown year from Cather to "Miss McNully," a reviewer. Cather praises McNully's well-written review and laments the poor quality of many reviews of her works.

Horace Chase letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter dated 24 June 1814 and addressed to "Miss Betsey Blanchard" of Hopkinton, New Hampshire. Chase writes to Betsey, apparently a girlfriend, and tells her about his serious illness. He had been treated by Dr. Nathan Smith (1762-1829). This is the same Dr. Smith who treated Joseph Smith (1805-1844), first president of the Mormon Church, the year before.
