William T. Sherman letter

Scope and Contents

The William T. Sherman letter is addressed to Francis Amasa Walker and is dated August 20, 1874. At the time of the writing, Sherman was the Commander-in-Chief of the US Army. Sherman expresses his views on the topic of a book, and adds comments on the Mormon problem-suggesting that both Mormons and Indians must be assimilated into American society to survive the consequences of the westward movement.

Bathsheba W. Bigler Smith autobiography

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a 260-page handwritten autobiography. Smith includes copies of correspondence and patriarchal blessings in her account. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1837, lived with the Mormons in Missouri and Illinois, married George Albert Smith in 1841, allowed him to take additional wives, came to Utah in 1849, and served as president of the Relief Society.

Claude L. White papers

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, diaries, a play script, and a missionary tracting book. The materials relate to White's activities as a missionary for the Mormon Church in the Northwestern States Mission from 1915 to 1917. The diaries are for the years from 1915 to 1916 and for 1963. Most of the correspondence are between White and family members, but some are also with Melvin J. Ballard, a Mormon official who became an apostle in 1919.
