Dale W. Adams research collection on Mormons in Ohio

Scope and Contents The contents of this collection represent the research notes of Dale Adams regarding several important events in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In many cases, photocopies of original sources are included in the collection. The main focus of the collection is the Ohio period of LDS history, with particular attention being paid to Solomon Spaulding (or Spalding) and D. Philastus Hurbut (or Hurlburt).

Ralph M. Aldous letters

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letters. Aldous writes to Phyllis whom he often refers to as "sweetheart" and "my dear." Aldous talks about his missionary experiences, complains that his parents never write, and asks about what is happening at home.

Hyrum L. Andrus letter

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten letter dated May 17, 1953. Andrus travelled with his wife to visit the location of a home owned by the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith (1805-1844) near the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. He describes what he saw there and relates stories of the Smith family that were told to him while he was there.

William Frank Atkin papers

Scope and Contents Correspondence, diaries, and a biography. The diaries relate to Atkin's missions to New Zealand from 1903 to 1906 and from 1916 to 1918. The correspondence is from family members and friends and largely relates to family matters and to Atkin's missionary activities. The biography is a history of Atkin's father, Thomas Atkin (1833-1919), who was a Mormon pioneer that was active in Tooele County politics. Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, dated 17 Jan. 1863, and addressed to Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church. Atwood expresses the need for seed and equipment until after the harvest.

Jesse O. Ballenger letters

Scope and Contents Photocopies of typescripts of four letters by Ballenger, three addressed to President Brigham Young and one to Apostle John Taylor outlining conditions in the settlement at Sunset Crossing, Arizona. Content includes relationship with local Native American tribes. Dated 1876-1877.

Clarence Marcellus Barker papers

Scope and Contents Includes journals, notebooks, an autograph album, letters, and articles relating to his mission in Australia. Five journals document his missionary activities in Sidney, Tasmania, Adelaide, and Perth, including encounters with RLDS missionaries. Notebooks contain a statistical record of his missionary activities, and missionary references, including notes on polygamy and on the RLDS Church. Scope and Contents Photocopies of Delbert Barney's correspondence with government and ecclesiastical officials. He describes an eye-witness account of the "transfiguration" of the Mormon Church President Brigham Young into the likeness of Joseph Smith in 1844 and discusses Blacks and the Mormon priesthood.

Emery F. Barrus letters and diary

Scope and Contents Nine handwritten letters and 6 pages of Elder Emery F. Barrus' journal kept while he served as a missionary for the Mormon Church in the Southern States Mission in 1899. Letters and journal describe both Barrus' travels and attempts to preach the restored gospel, primarily to people of Tennessee and Missouri. Both letters and journal pages are photocopied for patron use. Also included are the funerary program and a newspaper obituary of Ruth Hammond Barrus.
