Scope and Contents

Mimeographed copy of a typewritten history. Watkins migrated to Utah in 1856 with the ill-fated Martin Handcart Company. He writes of an incident during the trek with that group. On a very cold night in Wyoming, Watkins and two others found, killed, and butchered an ox.

Oral history interview with Stanislawa Habel

Collection contains three cassette tapes with an oral history of Stanislawa Habel conducted by Dennis Campbell. Materials document her life story as she lived in Poland in the 1940s to 1970s as well as her immigration to Canada before finally moving to Utah in 1991. The materials discuss Stanislawa Habel's childhood in Poland, her family life, her conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and her career as a nurse. Materials dated August 2001.

Scope and Contents

Collection contains the autobiography of Joseph Parry, a transcript of the journal of John Parry, and photocopies of miscellaneous articles on Joseph Parry and the Fort Lemhi and Salmon River Mission. Joseph Parry's autobiography covers the period 1837 to 1855, including a description of his mother's death, his conversion to Mormonism, an incomplete account of his mission to the Salmon River Valley and the construction of Fort Lemhi, and his later settlement in Ogden, Utah.

James Mills Paxton autobiography

Photocopy of a 17-page handwritten autobiography. Paxton was born in England, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1854, migrated to Utah in 1863, worked in Parowan in 1864, moved to Panguitch in 1865, participated in the Black Hawk War against the Indians, and learned masonry at Toquerville in 1867. He also presents a copy of his patriarchal blessing.

George Pectol autobiography

Scope and Contents Photocopies of a holograph document. The item purports to be a diary but was written retrospectively. Pectol tells of his conversion to the Mormon faith, the emigration of his family by wagon to Utah, and early settlement in Manti, Utah. The accounts often sermonize about the veracity of the Mormon Church and comment on its history. George Pectol autobiography

Scope and Contents

Two typewritten copies of excerpts from an autobiography. Some of the account is written in the form of a diary. Pectol writes about his conversion to the Mormon Church, his migration to Utah in 1850, and his life in Manti, Utah, starting in 1850. Pectol describes life in Manti including disagreements with his wife and encounters with the local Ute Indians before, during, and after the "Walker War" of 1853 to 1854.

James M. Peterson diary

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of a handwritten diary and several newspaper obituaries of members of Peterson's family. The events in Peterson's life are recounted from 1850 to 1866, after which a daily record was kept until 1899. Included are incidents from Sevier County history including politics, the Black Hawk War, census records for 1895, and personal business dealings. Peterson also writes about his family, national events, and local weather and temperatures.
