Robert H. Campbell sketchbook

Scope and Contents

Sketchbook with sketches and poems produced when Campbell was on vacation at Sebago Lake, Maine, in 1881. They were done in pencil and ink. The sketches are of scenes and persons Campbell saw or met. The poems largely reflect on life and the nature of Campbell's surroundings. A photocopy of the book is also available.

Scope and Contents Collection consists of an artist notebook and art journal, scrapbook, along with various loose papers. Ottinger's art journal is full of hand written instructions on colors he mixed to achieve multiple shades used for many of his paintings. Approximately half of the scrapbook is empty and contains magazine articles Ottinger wrote for The Juvenile Instructor, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' youth magazine, entitled "America,” which are glued into the scrapbook. Correspondence, sketchbooks, research files, autobiographical files, scrapbooks, and news clippings. Also includes diaries, address and memorandum books, and financial records. Most letters were exchanged with family members and close friends. Primary correspondents included his son, Mahonri Sharp Young; his first wife, Cecilia Sharp Young; and Mary Lightfoot Tarleton, whom he met in Paris after Cecilia died in 1917. Research files include extensive information on other artists.
